Most serious fine art photography is done in black and white.
The reason is that the reduction of colors to tones of gray abstracts
an image, giving it a certain distance from reality, a distance
which we frequently feel appropriate to art. Black and white photography
is much the same as an etching or charcoal drawing in a sense.
The form, tonality and composition must carry the picture. There
is no crutch of color to support it.
